Red Admiral Butterfly

Today I spent the day bird watching at Dungeness, on the south coast of Kent, enjoying some sunny weather. I got some nice photos of gulls loafing on the beach and saw some interesting birds on the RSPB nature reserve. While I was sitting in one of the hides, watching wading birds, I noticed some butterflies feeding on ragwort in front of the hide, including this Red Admiral.I took the opportunity to get this image, using full zoom and a short depth of field. The near perfect lighting made getting the butterfly into focus very easy and the result was a very nice photo made all the more satisfying because it was a really quick shot taken with minimum of thought. Sometimes you just get lucky with lighting and the subject’s pose.
